Chapter 3 The Untold Stories of Elves and Demons
"Damn those demons are here again!"
Fendona threw down a resentful remark, then transformed into a gust of wind, grabbed her staff, and rushed out onto the terrace.
"Your Highness, danger!" A guard reached out to stop him, but his fingertips barely brushed past a fleeting shadow.
"My people are bleeding, I can't just stand by and watch!"
Fendona's resolute voice faded into the distance.
The remaining elven guards exchanged glances, then, ignoring Lin Mo, this peculiar visitor from another world, they all transformed into green shadows and chased after him.
In the blink of an eye, Lin Mo was the only one left in the magnificent treehouse.
"Hey! Wait a minute!"
Lin Mo shouted at the empty doorway.
No one ignored him.
"Then untie me!"
"Are you just going to abandon me like this?"
Suddenly he felt a loosening in his ankle.
The vines binding him twitched and automatically retracted into the crack in the floor.
"Um?"
Lin Mo was overjoyed. He quickly rubbed his numb ankle and rushed to the balcony without wasting a second.
He needs to take this opportunity to learn about this amazing world.
As for escaping, where can one escape to when one is unfamiliar with the place?
Judging from the bugle calls and the tense atmosphere, war was definitely taking place.
This magical place with its World Tree might just be Earth's lifeline.
He needs to figure out who he's fighting.
How strong is the enemy?
The danger needs to be assessed, otherwise he might die an unknown death while he's alone here.
Lin Mo stepped out of the treehouse and onto the suspended walkway connecting the giant tree branches, and was once again stunned by the sight before him.
This is an elven city built entirely on top of towering trees!
Countless living vines weave a network of covered walkways hundreds of meters in the air, connecting exquisite treehouses.
The exotic flowers and rare plants are breathtakingly beautiful under the sunlight.
Countless elves darted swiftly across the covered bridge, their figures agile, each face bearing the grim warning of an impending storm.
His gaze went beyond the covered bridge and into the distance.
World Tree.
Only then did he truly see its main body.
The tree canopy was so tall that you couldn't see the top; it seemed to pierce right into the clouds.
Countless buildings spiral upwards along the thick tree trunks, twinkling with lights, resembling a divine kingdom.
Lin Mo's mind instantly flashed to the "Ark" project that the Great Xia was frantically building.
Steel bunkers, concrete cages, with eternal rock formations overhead, breathing filtered, recirculated air.
Compared to what's in front of us, that's just barely surviving.
This is what life is all about!
This tree alone is a complete ecosystem!
If we could move the whole thing back to Earth, why would we need Project Ark or interstellar colonization?
This tree itself is a new world that can feed tens of millions of people!
Lin Mo's breathing was rapid, his eyes burning with a mixture of greed and longing.
He suppressed his shock and, searching for the direction where Fendona and the others had gone, began to run wildly across the sky bridge.
Fortunately, he had probably just come out of Fendona's room. Although the elves along the way cast questioning glances at him, the battle was urgent and no one had time to stop him for questioning.
They all treated him as a guest of the princess.
The further they ran, the more intense the atmosphere of war became.
Countless elven warriors, clad in standard leather armor and wielding longbows or staves, poured out of the treehouses from all directions and merged into the main road leading to the edge of the city.
Their expressions were stern, and their movements were silent, with only the faint sound of their armor plates colliding, forming a green torrent.
No one spoke, but the sheer ferocity of their defiance made even an outsider like Lin Mo feel a tightness in his chest.
He followed the elven army forward until they finally reached the edge of the city.
There are no city walls here.
Or rather, the city walls here are alive.
Hundreds of giant tree-men, each over 100 meters tall, stood shoulder to shoulder, their gnarled roots deeply embedded in the earth.
The thick branches intertwine to form a continuous green barrier.
Countless elven archers stood on the shoulders and arms of the treants, holding longbows and gazing into the distance.
Fendona stood atop the tallest tree-man, her staff radiating emerald light, poised to strike.
Lin Mo ran breathlessly up the steps formed by the tree branches to her side and peered out, following her gaze.
With just one glance, the blood in his body turned cold.
A black line appeared on the distant horizon.
It was a black ocean that was bursting its banks, expanding and surging at a visible speed, rushing madly toward them.
It's a massive army!
An endless tide of demons!
A mixture of bizarre and terrifying monsters formed this black wave.
There were minotaurs several meters tall wielding giant axes, swift and agile demon hounds on all fours, and flying demons circling at low altitudes...
Lin Mo's scalp tingled at the sheer number of them.
There must be tens of thousands!
The earth groaned in pain as they trampled it, and a foul demonic aura surged into the sky, staining it a dark red.
Lin Mo had seen countless Hollywood special effects blockbusters, such as "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Avengers," but none of the scenes could compare to the apocalyptic landscape before him.
That was a truly overwhelming sense of oppression and grandeur!
"What... are those things?" Lin Mo turned to look at Fendona.
Fendona's expression was filled with resentment, and she said without turning her head:
"Demons born from another hellish realm, enemies of all living beings on the continent of Terra!"
Lin Mo's mouth gaped open, his face filled with astonishment.
"An invasion of hell?"
Is this the enemy the Elven race will face?
How can we fight like this?
He looked at the endless demon army, which included many gigantic units as large as small buildings.
Looking at the Elven side, they are all handsome men and beautiful women.
Is this combat capability sufficient?
Are you sure this won't turn into a scene of being pushed around in some R-rated comics?
Lin Mo wanted to ask something more, but Fendona suddenly raised her staff high and shouted loudly.
"Elemental Spirits, prepare—Attack!!"
In an instant, the chanting of countless elves resounded.
Various magical orbs, wind blades, and ice spikes converged into a colorful torrent that filled the sky and slammed into the distant magical tide.
The booming explosions continued incessantly.
Countless demons were blasted to pieces.
However, the black ocean only paused briefly before being filled with more monsters from behind and continuing its advance.
