Chapter 366 Unsung Heroes
Chapter 366 Unsung Heroes
Lin Mo followed behind Secretary Li, their footsteps echoing in the empty corridor.
The three security doors opened in sequence.
At each gate, the guards stood ramrod straight, their eyes fixed on him with intense gaze.
"Greetings, sir!"
A chorus of salutes rang out.
Lin Mo smiled and nodded in response.
After passing through the last door, a bright and open space suddenly appeared before me.
Military airfield.
In the vast space, the stark white light illuminated every corner with exquisite detail.
Several large unmanned transport aircraft painted in camouflage sat quietly in a corner, their bodies still bearing the metallic smell of machinery after maintenance.
"Commander Lin, this way please."
Secretary Li said respectfully, leading him towards the center of the parking area.
There stood a set of silver-gray protective suits.
It is at least two meters tall.
It looks like an upright metal coffin.
Lin Mo approached and looked up to examine him.
This thing is entirely silver-gray, with fine metallic patterns covering its surface, and has interfaces for hydraulic devices at the joints.
"This is the latest heavy-duty radiation protection suit."
Secretary Li stood to the side, her tone tinged with pride.
"The inner layer is a 10-millimeter-thick lead plate, and the outer layer is a titanium alloy skeleton."
He paused, then added:
"Total weight: 280 jin (140 kg)"
Lin Mo raised an eyebrow.
Two hundred and eighty jin?
Wearing this thing, an ordinary person would probably be unable to even stand up, let alone walk.
"It can block 95% of the radiation currently on the Earth's surface."
Secretary Li continued, her gaze fixed on Lin Mo.
"The remaining five percent will have to be purified by your holy light."
Lin Mo nodded. "Understood."
Two technicians quickly stepped forward.
They moved with practiced ease, first opening the back hatch of their protective suits and then gesturing for Lin Mo to enter.
Lin Mo took a deep breath and stepped inside.
The cold metal pressed against my back.
click-
The hatch closed.
A heavy feeling instantly pressed down on my shoulders.
Lin Mo moved his arms, and the metal joints made a slight hydraulic sound.
Okay.
active.
Technicians surrounded him, checking various data on his protective suit.
"Air tightness is normal."
"The hydraulic system is functioning normally."
"Communicator is working properly."
A series of reports rang out.
"Commander Lin, can you hear me?"
Secretary Li's voice came through the communicator inside the helmet, so clear it sounded like he was speaking right next to her ear.
"I can hear you."
Lin Mo responded.
"it is good."
Secretary Li paused, his tone becoming serious.
"Next, you will need to take a drone and then a newly repaired large elevator to the surface."
"Then he flew alone to the Arctic base."
"During this period, you can occasionally use Holy Light purification to maintain your health."
He paused for a moment and added:
"If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via communicator. We will monitor the situation closely and provide all necessary support."
Lin Mo took a deep breath.
"clear."
He strode heavily toward the unmanned transport plane in the center of the parking area.
With each step, the ground made a dull thud.
The technicians and soldiers around him all stopped what they were doing and watched him go.
In his eyes, there was admiration, awe, and a hint of curiosity.
Lin Mo walked up to the drone.
The hatch opened.
He crawled inside and sat in the metal chair.
The seats were cold and hard, but the fastenings were sturdy.
The hatch closed.
Click.
The airtight lock is tightened.
The transport cabin was pitch black, with only the red emergency lights flashing overhead.
Lin Mo looked through the small window on the hatch and saw the staff in the command center busy at the control panel.
A few seconds later, the drone vibrated slightly.
Engine starts.
A deep rumble sounded.
The aircraft moved slowly and entered the large elevator next to it.
The elevator doors closed.
Rumbling--
A dull mechanical sound rang out, and the elevator began to ascend.
Lin Mo leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes.
He could feel the elevator rising rapidly.
One hundred meters.
Two hundred meters.
500 meters.
800 meters.
Finally, the elevator stopped.
Ding--
The elevator doors opened.
Lin Mo opened his eyes and looked outside through the glass window of the hatch.
He was stunned for a moment.
Purgatory.
This was the first word that popped into his mind.
The sky was hazy and gray, with no blue sky or white clouds in sight.
The sun was nowhere to be seen.
The radioactive dust from the nuclear explosion mixed with volcanic ash from the eruption, obscuring the entire sky.
The ground was riddled with giant craters.
The scorched earth cracked into countless pieces, like ceramics baked by a raging fire.
In the distance, the ruins of several buildings can be vaguely seen.
They lie askew, like the skeletons of monsters, telling tales of past glory.
Countless tiny particles floated in the air.
That's radioactive dust.
They tumbled in the wind, like the breath of death.
Lin Mo's Adam's apple bobbed.
This is the surface of Earth after a nuclear war.
"Radiation levels are in line with expectations."
The technician's voice came through the communicator.
The surface temperature is minus twenty-three degrees Celsius.
"The dust density is in line with expectations, and the modified engine is expected to run stably for five hours as anticipated."
The intense heat of the nuclear explosion has long since cooled down.
Given that Arctic temperatures are already low, this temperature is not unusual.
It is foreseeable that temperatures will continue to drop in the future, eventually reaching around minus forty degrees Celsius.
Only near the equator will the temperature be higher.
Lin Mo was stunned by the scene outside the window and remained silent.
He stared at the wasteland outside the window, a feeling he couldn't quite describe welling up inside him.
This planet once nurtured countless lives.
Now, however, it has become a death zone.
The drone slowly drove out of the elevator.
Lin Mo then noticed that there was a small flat area outside the elevator.
The ground was covered with special steel plates, and there were traces of welding on the edges.
It was obviously laid later.
Lin Mo's heart skipped a beat.
With such high levels of radiation, ordinary people simply cannot work here.
Presumably, someone risked their life to clean this area with a roller, barely managing to clear out this platform.
He pressed the communicator, "Secretary Li, who built this platform?"
There was a few seconds of silence on the communicator.
"It's the 3rd Engineering Company."
Secretary Li's voice was somewhat low.
"They take turns coming up to work, and each person stays on the meter for no more than five minutes."
"They suffered greatly because they could only work in lightweight protective suits."
"In order to save on purification reels, they only used the very first one and kept going until the work was finished before drinking some holy water."
Lin Mo felt a pang in his heart upon hearing this, and silently made a mental note of the scene.
These unsung heroes deserve our respect.
Although there is holy water for treatment, the fact that one is willing to take the risk of coming up here and endure the pain of radiation during the process is itself a huge sacrifice.
While there seems to be a lot of trading in holy water and purification scrolls, it's still far too little for a nation.
It's not at the point where it can be used freely.
Frugality is a traditional virtue ingrained in the bones of the people of Daxia.
Just like back then, guns and ammunition were limited.
But our ancestors managed to protect the vast Xia Dynasty.
It freed people from displacement, straightened their bent backs, and prevented them from being humiliated.
Lin Mo took a deep breath:
How fortunate I am to stand shoulder to shoulder with you all in this life!
P.S.: Thank you all for the gifts during this time. I appreciate them all and am writing this extra chapter!
