Chapter 96 The Law That Something Will Always Happen at the Banquet
Chapter 96 The Law That Something Will Always Happen at the Banquet
(The last two chapters seemed a bit filler, but no worries, I've added an extra chapter!)
"Arkham?"
Speaking of this, Jaeger recalled something he had complained about to Burks, and couldn't help but feel a little curious.
So he perked up and prepared to listen carefully to what was going on.
And perhaps to make it easier to explain, the lights in the banquet hall went out the instant Harvey finished speaking.
The demonstration screen behind him lit up immediately.
The image above shows a photo of an old building decorated in a Gothic style, but which is dilapidated and appears quite eerie.
"As you can see, Arkham Asylum, or Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for short..." Harvey began his introduction.
Jaeger then learned that the mental hospital located on the outskirts of Gotham City actually had a very long history, dating back to the 19th century.
The first Arkham headmaster who built this building came from an Arkham family that was filled with tragedy and a family history of mental illness.
This hospital, originally built to treat or manage mental patients, eventually became the place where the director, who also suffered from mental distress in his later years, was hospitalized.
However, due to the historical context and technological limitations, Arkham Asylum at that time was more like a prison than a normal hospital.
Restraint garments and sedatives are often the only methods used to treat most patients.
So in recent years, Arkham Asylum has become increasingly dilapidated due to the rising human rights movement (even in Gotham), and it was just a matter of time before an earthquake collapsed this old building, bringing an end to this crazy and pathetic history of the hospital.
But now, this infamous building has caught the eye of the prosecutor's office and the Gotham Police Department, who plan to use its already well-equipped... well, detention facilities for renovation.
It has become a special kind of criminal detention facility that is nominally a mental hospital.
To put it bluntly, it's basically a prison.
Among the first batch of prisoners expected to be transferred, Jaeger heard the name of the "Scarecrow"—Professor Klein.
However, upon closer reflection, someone who would stop at nothing for experiments, become hopelessly addicted to fear, and even go so far as to hunt down human test subjects... might indeed have some kind of mental problem.
The Penguin is no match for him; he's a legitimate criminal and a legitimate gangster.
Even if they are eventually sent there, at most they will be sent to the Black Gate Prison next door.
However, after hearing about the renovation plan for Arkham Asylum, Jaeger suddenly had a flash of inspiration, and a phantom light bulb lit up next to his head.
Sometimes, the inspiration to solve a problem comes from these unexpected moments.
In fact, Jaeger had been thinking about how to deal with the Owl Court and their sacrificial rituals.
But now, looking at the Arkham photos being presented on stage, a very interesting idea suddenly started bubbling up in his mind.
Jaeger's eyes grew brighter and brighter as he quickly rehearsed the scenario: That's right, if that's the case... maybe it really will work.
The cult in Gotham, as expected, has to work with another sinister location in Gotham, with each side setting up a trap for the other.
Just as Jaeger was lost in thought, Bruce noticed Jaeger's gaze and even the faint smile on his face. He raised an eyebrow and followed Jaeger's gaze...
I happened to see a series of incredibly bloody photos of the old Arkham Asylum cells being shown on stage.
Bruce:
He began to seriously consider how to stop Jaeger should something happen to him someday...
And just then...
"boom--"
The moment the voice rang out in the otherwise silent banquet hall, apart from Harvey's voice, almost no one had time to react.
But this voice is familiar to everyone in Gotham.
Those were gunshots!
In an instant, screams erupted throughout the banquet hall.
But immediately following that sudden gunshot was another deafening explosion, the sound of crystals shattering!
Chaos erupted in the dark banquet hall in an instant.
Harvey on stage instantly forgot his speech, his eyes narrowing: "Ladies and gentlemen, calm down!"
"Who's in charge of the banquet hall lights? Turn them on right now!"
Meanwhile, backstage, Bruce had already swiftly installed a hidden earpiece in the dark, contacting Alfred, who was on standby, to prepare for any further developments.
Barbara also abandoned her relaxed demeanor, which was just for attending the party, and her expression became serious.
She hadn't expected this unexpected situation to happen, so she wasn't carrying her uniform with her at the moment.
At the same time, her gaze swept over Bruce, who seemed surprisingly calm beside her. She was somewhat surprised that this wealthy but cowardly man, known to the public as timid and cowardly, was not trembling in this crisis.
Jason instinctively wanted to stand up and look for Catherine, but seeing that everyone around him was very calm, he had no choice but to suppress his temper...
Calm down, Jason, calm down.
Jaeger noticed Jason's unnaturally trembling back and immediately thought of Catherine.
He thought for a moment, and before the lights came on, he bent down and, using the blind spot under the table covered by the tablecloth, summoned the [Messenger].
Due to space constraints, the messenger raven could not fully take shape this time; it could only poke its head out from the floor, which looked a bit eerie at first glance.
"Good messenger." Jaeger patted the Mistrak's head. "Could you check on Catherine Todd for me?"
The fog crow nodded and vanished instantly.
A minute later, it reassembled and informed Jaeger of the current situation with Catherine.
Knowing that Catherine was alright, Jaeger dismissed the messenger's summons and got up to return to the dining table.
Fortunately, the scene was chaotic; otherwise, the other three people at the table would have probably had some strange thoughts if they had noticed Jaeger suddenly crawling under the table for so long.
"Jason." Jaeger patted Jason, who was anxiously looking in Catherine's direction. "I've checked, your mother is fine, don't worry."
"..." Jason finally breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this. "Thank you, detective."
"But the problem now is..." Jaeger looked towards the most chaotic area of the crowd, "What exactly just happened?"
