Chapter 64 Chopper's Pirate Life!
Chapter 64 Chopper's Pirate Life!
Chapter 64 Chopper's Pirate Life!
Chopper spent his first day with the Norton Pirates in a corner of the medical room.
Clutching the medical kit given to it by Kureha, it huddled behind the wooden crate containing bandages, revealing only its blue nose and round eyes, cautiously observing this unfamiliar environment.
The White Pearl's medical room was much more spacious and brighter than the dark room in the Drum Kingdom's castle. The medicine cabinets were neatly arranged, the equipment was complete, and there were even two simple operating tables.
But the twenty doctors brought from the Kingdom of Drums were huddled together at the other end of the room, whispering amongst themselves, occasionally glancing fearfully toward the door.
You can hear the pirates talking and moving around there in a loud, gruff voice.
The door was pushed open.
Chopper shrank back behind the box in fright. He heard the sound of boots on the floor; it wasn't just one person.
"Where's the doctor? Come take a look at this guy's arm; the bone seems to be dislocated," a somewhat familiar voice said.
Chopper cautiously peeked out with one eye. He saw the green-haired swordsman standing in the doorway, leaning against the doorframe, his right arm hanging awkwardly at his sides, and dried blood on his forehead. Behind him followed the curly-browed cook.
A doctor walked over, trembling, and examined Zoro's arm.
"This—this is a serious fracture that needs immediate immobilization—but the anesthesia—"
"No need for anesthesia." Zoro interrupted him, sitting directly on an empty bed. "Just start it right away, hurry up, I still need to practice my sword."
The doctor wiped his sweat, and Chopper saw that Zoro's arm was badly swollen, with the bones clearly dislocated.
It remembered what Kureha had taught it: if this kind of injury wasn't treated promptly, it might affect its ability to use a knife in the future.
"Um—" Chopper whispered, his voice barely audible.
Everyone looked toward the corner where it was hiding.
Chopper reluctantly emerged from behind the box, his little hooves clutching the medkit nervously: "I—I can try—"
Sanji raised an eyebrow: "You?"
This was the first time he had ever seen a talking animal.
Chopper nodded vigorously and walked up to Zoro.
It raised its head and looked at the swordsman who was several heads taller than it. Zoro also looked down at it, his eyes devoid of emotion.
"You know how to set bones?" Zoro asked.
"Dr. Kureha taught me," Chopper said, his voice a little louder, "but—but I've never sued anyone, only injured animals in the forest—"
"Then let's give it a try." Zoro stretched his arm out in front of it. "Don't worry, try it boldly, don't worry about hurting me."
Chopper took a deep breath, opened the medical kit, and took out the splints and bandages.
Its little hooves weren't as dexterous as human fingers, but they were very steady. It gently touched the swollen area on Zoro's arm to determine the direction and angle of the bone misalignment.
"It will hurt a lot," Chopper whispered.
"Stop talking nonsense. Do you think I'm scared?" Zoro closed his eyes. "Hurry up."
Chopper gripped Zoro's wrists and forearms with his two front hooves, took a deep breath, and then pulled and twisted forcefully.
"Click."
A clear reset sound.
Zoro frowned slightly, but didn't say anything.
Chopper quickly secured the area with a splint and wrapped it with bandages, his movements so practiced it was hard to believe it was his first time treating someone. He even tied a neat knot at the end.
"alright----"
Chopper took a step back and wiped his forehead. Actually, there was no sweat on his forehead; it was just a habitual action.
"But you must avoid strenuous activity for at least two weeks, otherwise the bones may dislocate again —"
Zoro stretched his immobilized arm and looked at Chopper: "Not bad. What's your name?"
"Chopper."
"I am Zoro." The green-haired swordsman stood up. "Thanks, Dr. Chopper."
Chopper was stunned.
Doctor? It's being called a doctor now?
"Ugh~ Even if you praise me, I won't be happy~ You idiot~"
Zoro was slightly speechless as he walked out of the medical room. Sanji followed him out, and before leaving, he smiled at Chopper: "Not bad, Chopper. I'll give you a treat tonight."
Chopper stood there, stunned, his blue nose slightly red.
That afternoon, Chopper began to help treat the wounded.
Sasuke's burns on both arms need dressing changes, Zeff's leg injuries need re-bandaging, and Al's ribs need immobilization.
It bustled about, still timid at first, but its movements became increasingly skillful.
Seeing Chopper's skills, the doctors gradually became less afraid and began to cooperate with him.
The next day, Chopper encountered the group of "Ruhanna" on the deck.
Those were a dozen or so giant deer, much larger than ordinary reindeer, with dark brown fur and menacing antlers.
They were kept in a specially made enclosure behind the deck and looked after by several Ivanki warriors.
Chopper had gone to dry herbs, but when he saw them, he stopped in his tracks.
Luhannamen also saw Chopper. The largest of them—the leader of the herd tamed by Norton—lowered its head, sniffed the air, and then made a deep "groove" sound towards Chopper.
Chopper was instinctively a little scared. These giant deer looked too ferocious.
But Chopper still slowly walked over, stopped outside the fence, and whispered, "Hello—you guys."
Luhan stared at Chopper for a few seconds, then did something Chopper hadn't expected.
It lowered its head and gently touched Chopper's hat with its nose.
Chopper was stunned: "Is that so! You want to eat meat?"
Leader Luhan nodded.
"Can you understand their calls?" a voice came from the side.
Chopper turned his head and saw Al, the Evanki chieftain. His arm was still wrapped in bandages, but he could already walk.
Chopper blinked. "Because I was originally a deer! Because I ate the Human-Human Fruit, that's why..."
"I see. Ruhanna is also a variant of reindeer, just a bit bigger." El walked to the fence and touched the leader's neck. "They should be able to smell that you have the scent of their kind on you, although—it's a little different."
Chopper looked at Ruhann. They didn't show the same wariness or hostility they did towards other pirates; some of the younger ones even gathered around the railing, looking at him curiously.
"Can I touch them?" Chopper asked softly.
"Okay." Al opened the small gate in the fence. "They won't hurt you."
Chopper cautiously went inside. Ruhanna and the others gathered around, sniffing him and nuzzling him with their heads.
Chopper was a little stiff at first, but quickly relaxed. He raised his front paw and stroked the cheek of a young Ruhanna, who purred contentedly.
"They're not afraid of my blue nose—" Chopper murmured.
"Why be afraid?" Al said. "There are plenty of strange-looking people on this ship."
Chopper remembered Bucky with the red nose.
Indeed, compared to a red nose, a blue nose doesn't seem so strange.
After that, Chopper would make time to visit Ruhann every day.
Sometimes he would bring fresh hay, and sometimes he would just talk to them. Ruhanna seemed to like this "little fellow" very much, and would always come over to Chopper whenever they saw him.
Chopper gradually became familiar with the "monsters" on the ship.
Bucky's red nose is indeed very noticeable. Once, Chopper ran into him in the hallway, and Bucky was looking in the mirror, sighing, "Damn it—why is my nose red—what a waste of such a handsome face!"
Chopper whispered, "I think—the red nose is pretty good."
Bucky whirled around, saw it was Chopper, and breathed a sigh of relief: "It's you, little guy! What did you say? Red nose is good? No! Who did you call red nose, you bastard!"
Chopper blushed slightly, paused, and replied seriously, "At least it's special! My blue nose is too—Dr. Kureha said that being special isn't a bad thing."
Bucky stared at Chopper for a few seconds, then suddenly burst out laughing, patting Chopper on the shoulder and almost knocking him over.
"Well said! Being special isn't a bad thing! I'm going to be the Pirate King, and a red nose is the symbol of a king!"
From then on, Bucky would greet Chopper whenever he saw him, and although he was still arrogant, at least he didn't treat him like an outsider anymore.
Chopper was also very curious about Sasuke's crow form.
Once, Sasuke was practicing on the deck, his black wings unfurling, making him seem to blend into the shadows. Chopper was hiding behind the mast watching, but Sasuke discovered him.
"What's up?" Sanosuke pulled down his mask, revealing half of his face.
"I'm sorry!" Chopper was so scared he tried to run away.
"No need to run." Sanosuke folded his wings. "You want to see?"
Chopper nodded, then shook his head, and finally whispered, "Your wings—are cool."
Sanosuke stared at it for a few seconds, then reached out his hand, and a black feather drifted down in front of Chopper. Chopper carefully caught it; the feather shimmered with a deep blue luster in the sunlight.
"Here you go," Sanosuke said, then disappeared into the shadows.
Chopper held the feather and looked at it for a long time.
Zoro's training borders on self-torture.
Even before his broken arm had healed, he started practicing with his left hand. Every time Chopper went to change his bandages, he could see new wounds on his body.
"You'll make the wound reopen if you keep doing that—" Chopper complained under his breath as he bandaged the wound.
"It doesn't matter." Zoro mumbled, biting the hilt of his Wado Ichimonji. "If I don't get stronger, I'll get beaten again next time."
Chopper didn't understand that kind of obsession, but it carefully treated its wound and even tied a small cherry blossom knot on the bandage. Kureha taught it to do this, saying it would bring good luck.
Sanji's cooking skills amazed Chopper.
When Chopper first tasted the grilled fish made by Sanji, he was so happy he almost cried.
"It's so delicious—this is the best thing I've ever eaten—" Chopper said, his eyes brimming with tears.
Sanji smugly blew a smoke ring: "Of course, Chopper. Just tell me what you want to eat from now on, the kitchen will always be open for you."
However, Sanji's attitude towards men is quite poor. Chopper once saw him beggar Buggy and Django, and then kick them out of the kitchen. But he's exceptionally gentle with Nami, Fryn, and Chopper.
Kuro always made Chopper a little scared. The bespectacled man seemed polite and spoke gently, but Chopper always felt that there was a cold look in his eyes behind his glasses.
One time, Chopper accidentally stumbled upon Kuro trimming his nails with his cat claws in his room, and the metallic scraping sound sent chills down Chopper's spine.
When Kro saw it, he adjusted his glasses, smiled, and said, "Dr. Chopper, what's the matter?"
"N-no!" Chopper turned and ran.
Zango's hypnosis is ridiculous.
Once, he tried to hypnotize a seasick pirate, but while spinning around, he also got dizzy, and the two of them fell to the ground and fell fast asleep.
Chopper happened to be passing by and it took him a lot of effort to shake Zango awake.
"Ugh—failed again—" Zango rubbed his head and sat up. Seeing Chopper, he grinned. "Thanks. Want to see me perform hypnosis? I promise you won't fall asleep this time!"
Chopper quickly shook his head and ran away.
Chopper saw Dalton in his Bison form once.
It happened during a storm when the ropes securing the cargo snapped, and several boxes of supplies were about to slide into the sea.
Dalton transformed instantly, using his body to block the boxes and forcefully pushed them back to their original positions. After reverting to human form, he sat on the deck, panting heavily, and Chopper quickly went over to check if he was injured.
"I'm fine." Dalton smiled at Chopper. "But you, don't run around on the deck in this storm."
Chopper nodded, but still insisted on checking him over again to make sure he was really alright before he felt relieved.
As for Norton—
Chopper's feelings for the captain were the most complex.
Norton rarely spoke, mostly just standing at the bow of the ship looking at the sea, or studying nautical charts in his room. But Norton's imposing presence instilled an instinctive sense of awe in Chopper.
On one occasion, the fleet encountered a thunderstorm cloud. The dark cloud was so thick that it seemed to press down on the sea, and lightning danced wildly within it.
Norton walked to the bow of the ship, and simply threw a punch at the thundercloud.
Chopper, who was in the medical bay on the lower deck, felt the ship shaking. He ran to the porthole and looked out, and saw a huge, circular hole in the center of the thundercloud, from which sunlight shone, casting a beam of light onto the sea.
The thunderclouds slowly dispersed around the hole, and the storm was shattered with a single punch!
Chopper opened his mouth wide, unable to close it for a long time.
That evening at dinner, Chopper whispered to Dalton, who was sitting next to him, "Captain Norton—has he always been this strong?" Dalton was silent for a moment, then said, "I haven't known him for long. But I know he's the strongest human I've ever seen."
Chopper lowered his head and ate his rice.
The people on this ship are truly monsters!
But strangely enough, it doesn't dislike it.
Here, the blue-nosed reindeer is the doctor, the red-nosed clown is the leader, the ninja who can turn into a crow is the companion, the swordsman who practices self-torture is the patient, the chef who can make delicious food is the friend, the scary bespectacled man is the butler, the hypnotist who can hypnotize himself is the comedic character, and the uncle who can turn into a bison is the good guy.
There is also a group of giant deer that do not mind its blue nose and treat it as one of their own.
Perhaps—perhaps it itself is also a monster?
As Chopper thought about this, his blue nose turned slightly red again. This time it wasn't because he was happy, but because of a feeling he couldn't quite explain.
After finishing the last bite of its meal, it cleaned up its dishes and said to Sanji in the kitchen, "Thank you for the meal! It was delicious!"
Then it picked up its medical kit and headed towards Sauron's room—it was time to change its dressing.
In the corridor, it encountered Norton, who was on his way to a meeting.
Norton glanced at it and nodded as a greeting.
Chopper mustered his courage, raised his head, and said, "Captain! I will try my best to become a good ship's doctor!"
Norton stopped and looked down at the little guy who was barely up to his knees. A few seconds later, Norton grinned, reached out, and ruffled Chopper's hair.
"Um."
Just one word. But Chopper felt his nose turn bright red.
It watched Norton's departing figure and clenched its little hooves.
This ship is full of monsters!
And it, Chopper, will also become a monster doctor worthy of this ship!
