Chapter 44: You Deserve It
Chapter 44: You Deserve It
"Alright, Peter, you should go back and rest now."
"But I..."
Connors took off his glasses and rubbed his sore eyelids. He and Peter had been working in this laboratory for a long time without eating or drinking.
This feeling was far more tiring than when I was researching lizard serum.
The young man was energetic, strong, and tireless.
He couldn't do that. In middle age, things weren't as good as before. The fact that he couldn't even make himself a cup of coffee to keep going meant that the remaining lizard serum in his body was making its last ripples.
"You went from answering phone calls at the beginning to silencing your phone later, throwing yourself into the experiments without a care in the world."
Connors said, "Honestly, you're a real tough nut to crack, both as Spider-Man and as Peter Parker."
Peter gave an awkward laugh.
The short rest after long hours of work is met with protests from all aspects of the body.
For example, his stomach growled at that moment.
"Want to grab something to eat together? It's on me."
Connors put his glasses back on and prepared to leave the laboratory.
Otto, their old friend, helped them for a while at first, then went back to his own work, though he did come to the lab again occasionally.
However, Otto was looking for Peter, asking the kid how he felt facing the machine tentacles and if there was anything he could improve.
Peter's face darkened considerably after hearing this. He didn't know how to respond, and he felt that if he suggested any improvements, he would suffer greatly in the future!
"I'm sorry, Doctor..."
Peter took out his phone, glanced at the time, and saw it was already six o'clock in the evening.
Thank goodness it's the weekend, otherwise, after all this fuss, I probably would have skipped class again!
Peter sent messages to Aunt May and Gwen that he was safe and sound, saying, "Aunt May is waiting for me at home. I have to go back."
"It's alright." Connors nodded, then, as if remembering something, asked, "What about your raven?"
"They probably went to the docks to eat fries."
"French fries? Crows eat French fries?"
"Yes, I even wondered if it was dyed by seagulls."
Peter packed his things, ready to leave the lab with Connors.
As soon as they stepped outside, they saw a man in a well-tailored suit walking towards them.
"Mr. Parker?"
Peter looked at Connors beside him with a slight puzzlement, as if asking who this person was.
"Norman's assistant," Connors whispered. "Of course, this one won't turn into a lizardman."
Peter chuckled, knowing that Dr. Connors was joking about Kaidara.
He then replied to the man, "That's me."
The assistant came over and handed Peter a roll of paper.
Peter took it and discovered that it was a check guaranteed by Osborn, and the amount on it was...
Wait a minute?!
One thousand dollars! ?
Peter rubbed his eyelids to make sure he wasn't seeing things.
"Wow, Parker, this is a steal! You have to give me the whole villa!"
Oz was standing on his shoulder at some point, whispering in his ear.
Peter ignored Oz and decisively rejected the check, saying:
"I'm sorry, this is too expensive, I can't accept it..."
"Mr. Parker, this is Mr. Osborn's intention."
The assistant simply placed his hands on his abdomen, shook his head, and replied.
Peter still refused: "I'm sorry, I can't accept it. Tell Mr. Osborne that this was my own choice."
"Mr. Osborne expected you to say that."
The assistant smiled and said, "He told me that once you say those words, he'll have me talk to you—"
"The affairs of our parents are their own affairs; the stories of the younger generation are a new chapter."
Peter remained silent.
Then someone patted him on the shoulder; it was Dr. Connors.
"Take it, child, it's what you deserve."
"I......"
"Stop dawdling like a woman, Parker, if you don't take me soon, I'm going to play a cruel joke on you!" Oz the Demon whispered.
"..."
Peter was speechless at Oz's words, but ultimately accepted the check.
It wasn't that he was afraid Oz would make a hellish joke, but rather that he understood what Norman Osborn meant.
Norman has a genetic disease that will eventually affect Harry, and he hopes that he can cure Harry when that happens.
Norman's meaning was simple: he didn't want himself and Harry to follow in the footsteps of their elders.
"Please pass on this message to Mr. Osborne, thank you."
"I will."
After his assistant left, Peter let out a long sigh of relief.
To be honest, the responsibility Norman entrusted to him was quite heavy.
Compared to Oz's constant chanting of "a thousand cuts, a thousand cuts" in his ear.
Connors' words seemed to alleviate his heavy mood.
"Peter, I've noticed you're particularly prone to internal conflict."
"Is there?"
Connors and Peter walked to the elevator doors, pressed the button, nodded, and said:
"Of course, you're the most infuriating person I've ever met. You take on a lot of things that shouldn't be your responsibility."
"I think......"
The elevator doors opened, and Connors and Peter stepped inside. He smiled and said to Peter:
"That's probably why you became Spider-Man."
Peter chuckled lightly and changed the subject: "I never knew my father and Mr. Osborne had this relationship."
"I don't know how to draw a conclusion. My father... I don't know if what he did was right or wrong."
"Anyway, he's not as good as your uncle. His biggest role was to bring you into this world."
Peter, expressionless, pinched Oz's foul mouth shut!
"It might be right, it might be wrong, who knows?"
Connors said, "I can understand what Richard wanted to do. He thought he had created a monster that would destroy the world, so he erased the results of the experiment."
Norman felt he had been let down, especially after receiving so much from him; there was no right or wrong in such matters.
Peter nodded, indicating his agreement with Dr. Connors' statement.
"But anyway."
As usual, Connors patted the boy on the shoulder and said, "You are you, and you are unique."
Peter lowered his head and whispered, "I don't deserve to be treated like this, Doctor."
Whether it was Connors, Norman, or other close friends and family members, they all had exceptionally high expectations of themselves.
He acted as if he were some great person, worthy of all their praise.
But Peter didn't think so.
He just felt that he hadn't done enough.
It can be done even better.
drop--
The elevator doors slowly opened, but instead of taking us to the first floor of the building, it took us to another experimental floor.
Connors walked towards the door, smiling as he said, "I suddenly have an idea I need to talk to Otto about, so I'll be going now."
As he stepped out of the elevator, he turned back to look at the young man.
He said, "In fact, you deserve it."
