Chapter 28 Just Curiosity
Chapter 28 Just Curiosity
Yunping grabbed a broom from outside and followed Ye Zi, who was limping, into her room.
Visibility is easily obstructed at night, and the warm candlelight inside the house cannot illuminate every corner of the room, which is why nocturnal animals like rats appear.
Although mice are mostly active at night in search of food, Yezi's room had been uninhabited before and was far from the kitchen where food was stored. The door was usually closed, so mice shouldn't have been there.
The room was simply furnished, with only a table, two stools, and a bed.
A woman's room should have a dressing table, but this room did not. Ye Zi, who used to be Mu Li's maid in the Rouge Pavilion, also did not have a dressing table.
There was none before, and there is none now, so there's no sense of imbalance in my heart.
Yunping waved the broom at the foot of the bed and tapped the bed board, trying to scare out the mouse hiding under the bed, but after a few muffled sounds, nothing unusual happened in the room.
Ye Zi stood beside Yun Ping, holding a candlestick to illuminate his vision. The candlelight enveloped her fair and delicate face, which was somewhat plain. Her gaze was fixed on Yun Ping's every move, and then she simply blinked expressionlessly.
"Perhaps the girl has just moved and is living alone, so she feels unfamiliar and is therefore frightened and may have misjudged the situation. Yezi, don't be afraid. If you hear any strange noises at night, just shout loudly. Luobai lives right across the street and will definitely hear you."
Yunping muttered to himself, straightened up while leaning on the broom, and looked at the young woman beside him with a kind smile.
"I understand, Uncle Yun."
"Your background is pitiful, and it's perfectly fine to stay here temporarily and find a better place later. My son and I are just ordinary people, so you don't need to lower yourself. Just stay here comfortably. Luo Bai is a kind-hearted boy; those who know him well know that..."
Yunping wanted to say something more, but the cold moonlight shining through the window fell on him. He took a broom and walked to the window, looking at the bright moon in the dark night sky. His face, which had lost its youthful innocence and was now sculpted by the years, was momentarily lost in thought.
"Uncle Yun, you are truly a good person. A good person like you deserves to live a peaceful and smooth life, free from the troubles of worldly affairs."
Ye Zi's voice came from behind him. Yun Ping turned around and saw Ye Zi biting her lip and staring at him.
Knowing that Ye Zi had a difficult life, Yun Ping naturally wanted to show her some kindness.
"Haha, then wouldn't I become a monk in a temple? People will always encounter difficulties in life, and every ups and downs in life is proof that we are alive."
As he spoke, he stepped outside.
The night was cool, and the room across the street, with its white clouds, was still glowing.
"I'll go empty that kid's bathwater. It's easy to catch a cold during the spring and autumn seasons, remember to cover yourself well and don't get chilled."
"Okay, I got it. Thank you, Uncle Yun."
Watching Yunping leave the room and close the door, Yezi placed the candlestick she was holding on the table inside the room. She walked a few steps to the window where Yunping had been standing and looked up at the night sky just like him.
The night passed quietly.
As the morning sun shines on the ground in the courtyard, a new day full of hope begins with the rising sun.
Yun Luobai pushed open the door and took a deep breath of fresh air, feeling refreshed and invigorated.
He could hear sparrows chirping nearby. Looking closer, he found that Yezi's room door was tightly closed.
He's probably still in bed...
Yun Luobai thought to himself, then shook his head helplessly.
There are plenty of people in this world who don't know their place, and coincidentally, one of them was brought into his home yesterday.
"Young Master Yun has been staring at that young lady's room door since early morning. Could he be harboring some ulterior motive?"
A familiar voice came from the courtyard gate. Yun Luobai looked in the direction of the voice and saw Ye Zi leaning against the wall, smiling at him.
Today she changed into a dark green dress, the color of which was much deeper than the green cloth dress she wore yesterday, and the fabric was also of much better quality.
Even though she doesn't look like a young lady from a wealthy family at this moment, she is at least like an ordinary woman laughing and joking in the streets, able to temporarily escape the fate of being a maid serving tea, water, washing clothes and cooking for her master.
"If I harbored ill intentions towards you, I wouldn't have given you that contract of indenture. But you, now that I'm letting you go, are unwilling to leave. Could it be that you've fallen for me at first sight…?"
"Young Master Yun may seem cold and ruthless, but he has a very high opinion of himself."
"Both the meanings are derogatory..."
I wasn't planning on praising you anyway.
Ye Zi pouted, her clear eyes blinking slightly, her disdainful gaze sweeping over Yun Luobai, making him feel extremely uncomfortable. He could only pretend not to hear Ye Zi's words and instead brought up the question of what third person should exist in this vast mansion besides the two of them.
"Where's my dad?"
"He left early this morning to go to the government office for his duty. He said he wouldn't eat at home, so he asked you to take me out to find a breakfast shop later."
"Is it possible that you should be responsible for making breakfast?"
"Is it possible that Uncle Yun just didn't want to eat the breakfast I made, which is why he left so early in the morning?"
"..."
The clouds fell silently, offering no response.
Ye Zi dragged her limping foot step by step toward him. Although her limp was not serious, it was still different from that of ordinary people. Such a pitiful person would always attract the attention of many passers-by. Even if she did not feel ashamed, she should at least feel uncomfortable.
But at this moment, she was smiling, and the warm morning sunlight shone on her delicate face, which should have belonged to a young girl, making people momentarily forget her physical disability.
Yun Luobai stood there stunned. After regaining her senses, she turned her face to the other side, as if she couldn't bear to see her dragging gait.
"Alright, let's save some walking."
"Oh, it's rare to see Young Master Yun showing such tenderness towards women."
"You should leave now. They can't even cook properly, yet they still have to feed and drink you. It's not like you're here to be a slave, but rather to enjoy yourself."
Although Yun Luobai's sarcastic words sounded somewhat harsh, Ye Zi was not angry at all. Instead, she reached out and patted Yun Luobai's shoulder lightly, as if brushing away non-existent dust from his plain white clothes.
Her hands were delicate and soft, but she quickly withdrew them.
"Rumor has it that Young Master Yun went out to seek medical treatment for a serious illness, and when he returned, he was extremely wealthy. How could he possibly be short of a few insignificant meals for an ordinary woman like me?"
Ye Zi still looked at Yun Luobai with a smile. Now that they were under the same roof, she seemed to really want to get along with Yun Luobai.
However, Yun Luobai has always been more sensitive than most people.
"You seem quite interested in me."
Ye Zi smiled slightly, her eyes seeming to sparkle with a gentle light.
"Just out of curiosity."
